ALFREDO TRIANA, JR., OSCAR FLORES AWARDED WITH LIP CHIP JOCKEY, TRAINER OF WEEK AT REMINGTON PARK
Journeyman jockey Alfredo Triana, Jr., can ride them short; he can ride them long, American Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds, it doesn’t matter. Currently he is riding the Thoroughbreds at Remington Park and doing it so well that he has been named Lip Chip Jockey of the Week.
Oscar Flores gets the award as Lip Chip Trainer of the Week, riding the wave of a 3-for-12 week for his starters and eight of those in the money – first, second or third. Triana, Jr., claims the award, based on a riding triple this past Saturday night and four winners on the week.
Triana has ridden 5,348 times in Thoroughbred races over his career with 596 wins and horses’ earnings of $12,841,625. In the Quarter Horse industry, he has mounted up 1,370 times with 240 wins and horses’ earnings of $4,264,396. He has even ridden some Paints, Appaloosas and Arabians over the years. It would not be out of line to call him the most versatile jock on the grounds with that background.
Thoroughbreds are his favorite this time of year as Triana made three trips to the winner’s circle with that breed at Remington Park on this past Saturday night. His winners came in the third race as he helped resurrect a past Oklahoma Classics Cup winner from 2021 – Absaroka. The 9-year-old gelding had lost his last four races by a combined 83 lengths coming into Saturday night’s score. Triana won on Absaroka for Flores by 2-1/4 lengths in the claiming ranks. He stalked in second for a quarter of a mile and then bounced to the lead, drawing away in the stretch with each stride for owner Chris L. Duncan of Poteau, Okla.
Triana’s second win on the card came in the very next race for trainer Scott Young, when they combined for a victory with Chitoz’s Blur, a 3-year-old filly that broke her maiden despite having been off since May 12, her last race at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore. This was the filly’s first run over the Remington Park main track and she won by three-quarters of a length for owners Iron Oaks Farm of Oklahoma City. Triana used the same stalking methods, this time sitting second for a half mile before taking over.
The final Triana win of the night was in the track’s final race of the night, the ninth, when he booted home Nalla D for her maiden win. She actually had broken her maiden at Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Iowa, on Sept. 8 by four lengths, but was disqualified in that race. She showed that was no fluke as she crossed the finish line first again, this time by 1-3/4 lengths at 5-2 odds. Scott Corderman was your winning trainer and the filly is owned by Downing Thoroughbreds of Orient, Iowa.
Flores’ three winners for the week were Absaroka on Saturday, Misses Millie on Friday and Slades Tank on Thursday. Misses Millie used the services of the only female rider here on a regular basis, Kelsi Purcell to break her maiden. Flores trains the 2-year-old filly for Dream Walkin Farms (Tonnie Covell) of Norman, Okla. She won by a half-length. Slades Tank was ridden by Ernesto Valdez-Jimenez in a battle to the wire with Ship the Money and veteran jockey Stewart Elliott. The 3-year-old gelding prevailed in the end, another running for owners Dream Walkin Farms. Slades Tank was racing in the claiming ranks.
Remington Park racing continues this week with a Thursday-Saturday schedule with a nightly first post time of 6pm.
